Here's a few short definitions of NLP
Here's how the term Neuro-linguistic Programming is broken down.
Here's a few short definitions of NLP
- The art and science of communication
- A manual for your brain
- The secrets of successful people
- A method for creating the life you desire
- A way of helping people make sense of their reality
- A way to understand yourself and others
- A toolkit for personal and organisational change
- The fundamentals of learning
Here's how the term Neuro-linguistic Programming is broken down.
- Neuro - This is about our Neurology. NLP is based on the idea that you experience the world through your six senses. This sensory information is transformed into our thinking, both consciously and unconsciously. These thought processes influence our neurological system, which affects our physiology, emotions and behaviour.
- Linguistic - refers to the way we use language to make sense of the world, conceptualise experience and communicate with others. In NLP linguistics is the study of how the words you use and the body language you display impacts your experience.
- Programming - draws heavily from learning theory. It looks how you code information and represent your experiences. Your own personal programming consists of your patterns of thinking and behaviours. This is all about the strategies we use to make decisions, solve problems, learn and how we create our results. NLP shows us how to recode our experiences and help us reprogram our internal patterns, habits and strategies so that you get the results you desire.
Who developed NLP?
Neuro‑Linguistic Programming was developed in the early 1970’s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. Whilst studying at the University of California at Santa Cruz Grinder and Bandler began to study the field of human change. They studied three experts in their field Virginia Satir, Fritz Pearls and Milton Erickson.
Virginia Satir is considered the most important person in family therapy. She was internationally-acclaimed as a therapist, trainer and author. She wrote several books among them “People making” and “changing with families” co-authored with NLP founders Richard Bandler and John Grinder. Many of NLP techniques, such as verbal matching, predicates, reframing and negotiating with parts were inspired by modelling Satir’s therapeutic skills and procedures. Her work concentrated on increasing self esteem and understanding other people's points of view
Fritz Perls was originally trained in psychoanalysis yet he broke the mould and came up with his own ideas which later became known as gestalt therapy. His premise was that psychotherapy was not aimed at fixing people but it should be a vehicle for personal development and a way of integrating mind and emotions. Pearls believed that people should trust their own instincts. He used the parts integration model and believed that the goal of therapy was to work with people to get these parts to live harmoniously.
Gestalt therapy focuses on doing and experiencing rather than just talking about problems. The methods and techniques are suited to both individuals and groups. A lot of the earlier NLP techniques have a lot in common with gestalt therapy. Sensory experience, non-verbal cues, spatial sorting and working with parts and polarities have their roots in the gestalt approach. In fact much of the meta model which you will learn during this course comes from modelling the patterns of questions asked by Fritz Pearls during his therapy sessions.
Milton Erickson probably had the greatest influence on the development of NLP. Despite having polio from the age of eighteen he had a career as a psychiatrist and started using hypnosis in his sessions despite much hostility from the psychiatric profession. In the last ten years of his life he practiced as a hypnotherapist in Phoenix Arizona. People from all over the world came to study and work with him.
John and Richard spent some time with him at his house in Phoenix. They modelled is language techniques, that later became the Milton model.
His easy going style of hypnotherapy and open ambiguous language allowed the client to interpret what he said in the way that made the greatest sense to them. This is the basis as we know it today of Ericksonian hypnotherapy. His language patterns are taught in NLP as the Milton model. These patterns are particularly useful for gaining buy-in from your audience, whether that's a class of students or with your colleagues.
