What is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)?
So what is NLP Neuro Linguistic Programming, it's the art and science of excellence, derived from studying how top people in different fields obtain their outstanding results. These communication skills can be learned by anyone to improve their effectiveness both personally and professionally. It can be applied to many fields such as communications, business, sales, education, sport and therapy.
Other definitions of NLP are
- Neuro Linguistic Programming is the study of how the brain codes learning and experience.
- NLP is a model of how we receive, store and retrieve information.
- Neuro Linguistic Programming is a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and subjective experience.
- Dr Richard Bandler who is widely regarded as the Co-Founder of Neuro Linguistic Programming defines NLP as ‘an attitude and methodology that leaves behind a trail of techniques’.
History of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Neuro Linguistic Programming was founded in 1976 by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. Richard Bandler is a mathematician, therapist and computer expert. Whilst studying he met John Grinder at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Grinder is a world renowned linguist and a language professor at UCSC. He and Bandler began to study the field of human change.
They studied some of the experts in this field like Virgina Satir and Milton H. Erickson. They discovered that Satir affected and changed behaviour in her clients by being very specific, whilst Erikson successfully achieved behavioural change by being extremely ambiguous with his use of language. This was the basis for the Meta and Milton model and the start of Neuro Linguistic Programming.
Virginia Satir
Virginia Satir was a leading developer of experiential family therapies. Satir used experiential techniques that allowed families to explore, understand, and change their own communication patterns in-session. Satir developed within her model five conceptual styles of communication: blaming, placating computing, distracting, and congruent communication. In Satir’s world, placaters act as pleasers and are often self-effacing, blamers act self-righteously and often literally point the finger, computers are emotionally detached, intellectual and can be inflexible, distracters lack focus and seemingly are unable to relate to what is actually being communicated about, and congruent communicators are expressive, authentic, aligned, and articulate themselves according to their environment. These became known as the Satir categories which are taught in Neuro Linguistic Programming Courses and our NLP Practitioner training.
Milton Erikson
Milton Erickson was an American hypnotherapist who specialized in medical hypnosis and family therapy. At age 17, he contracted polio and was so severely paralyzed that doctors believed he would die. Whilst recovering in bed, unable to speak, he became strongly aware of peoples non-verbal communication – body language, tone of voice, and the way that these non-verbal expressions often directly contradicted the verbal ones. Erikson was a master at sensory acuity and was able to build deep rapport with all of his clients. His ability to induce and utilise hypnosis was very impressive and this is why Richard Bandler and John Grinder modeled him. Bandler and Grinder modelled Eriksons behaviours and specific language patterns which later became known as the Milton model in NLP.
John and Richard continued to study and model people who were the very best in their field. Once they had modelled these observations they were able to teach their students to replicate them and use them with their own clients. Their students were also able to duplicate the behavioural changes using these techniques.
